Free Creative Brief Generator

A creative brief generator is a tool that turns what you know about a product, its audience and its goal into the structured document the person doing the work reads. Describe the work, paste customer reviews if you have them, and edit the message line before you send it on.

The work

What a creative brief contains

Ten sections, in this order. The generator fills every one of them, and a section your inputs cannot support comes back saying what is missing and who has to supply it, rather than blank.

1. Background
Where the brand is now and why this work exists. Two lines. Context, not a company history.
2. Objective
The one commercial outcome. "Sell the bundle to repeat buyers" is an objective. "Increase brand awareness" is a wish.
3. Audience
Who this is for, described by what they already believe and what they have already tried, not by an age bracket.
4. Insight
One sentence on why this audience will accept the message. The reason the claim works, and the section most briefs skip.
5. Single-minded message
The single thing the work has to land. A brief carrying three messages carries none, because the person producing the work picks one for you.
6. Reasons to believe
The proof behind the message: ingredients, guarantees, review counts, test results. Nothing here may be invented.
7. Deliverables
Formats, quantities and where each one runs. "Four static frames and two hook variants" is a deliverable list. "Some social assets" is a meeting.
8. Tone of voice
How it should sound, with a reference the reader can check rather than three adjectives.
9. Mandatories and constraints
Legal lines, brand rules, dates, budget, and anything that cannot change. Better here than in the second round of revisions.
10. How we will know it worked
One primary measure and one guardrail next to it, so the work is judged after it runs instead of debated before.

The same ten sections, empty, for when you already know the answers. Copy it into Notion, Google Docs, Asana or a ticket. The prompts under each heading are the questions a brief has to survive.

CREATIVE BRIEF

1. Background
Where the brand is now, and why this work exists. Two lines.

2. Objective
The one commercial outcome. Not "awareness".

3. Audience
What they already believe, what they already tried, what they fear.

4. Insight
One sentence: why this audience will accept the message.

5. Single-minded message
The one thing the work has to land. One sentence, no "and".

6. Reasons to believe
The proof. Every number traceable to something real.

7. Deliverables
Formats, quantities, and where each one runs.

8. Tone of voice
How it sounds, with a reference the reader can check.

9. Mandatories and constraints
Legal lines, brand rules, dates, budget, what cannot change.

10. How we will know it worked
One primary metric, one guardrail metric.

Six kinds of brief, and what each one owes its reader

Creative brief for an ad campaign
The default. One product, one audience, one message, with deliverables named per placement. Use it before a paid social sprint so the designer argues about execution rather than about what the ad is meant to say.
Graphic design brief
Adds formats, dimensions and the mandatories a designer needs in writing: logo rules, colour, typography, and what may not change. This is the brief that saves the third revision round.
Brand brief
Zooms out from one campaign to positioning, tone, and the rules everything downstream inherits. Pick this for a rebrand, a new line, or the first brief a new agency reads.
Content brief
For a writer: the reader, the promise and the proof for one piece. Note that an SEO content brief is a different document, built from keyword data and competing pages, and a search tool is the right place to make one.
Video or UGC brief
Carries the spoken opening, the duration, a shot list a creator can follow, and the one message the edit has to protect.
Project brief
Scope, deliverables, dates and the definition of done. The version that prevents the two most expensive conversations: what was in scope, and what "finished" meant.

Picking between the first three is the question most people arrive with. Creative brief vs marketing brief vs design brief sets the three side by side: what each one decides, who writes it, when it gets written, and what breaks when the wrong one reaches the person doing the work.

How to write the message line

The message is one sentence naming the single thing the work has to land. The test is the word "and": if you need it to join two ideas, you have two messages, and whoever produces the work will choose between them without you.

A worked example. Inputs: a cedar cutting board, an audience buying a wedding gift, a goal of selling the boxed version as a gift. A weak message is "premium craftsmanship and thoughtful gifting", which is two ideas and no argument. A usable one is "This is the board a couple still uses on the anniversary." One idea, checkable against the reviews, and specific enough that a designer knows what to shoot.

Read the message first when the brief comes back. If you would not defend it in a review, change it before you send the brief on, because everything downstream is built on that one line.

Where good briefs actually come from

A brief is only as good as the evidence under its insight, and most teams are sitting on that evidence unread: the objection that appears in four percent of reviews and quietly kills the sale, the use case nobody planned for in a comment thread, the phrase a customer used that is sharper than anything in the brand guidelines. Marketing teams activate just 33% of their martech stack's capabilities, down from 42% in 2022, per Gartner, and customer feedback is the clearest example of an asset already paid for and never used.

It matters because creative decides most of the outcome. Nielsen's creative-effectiveness research credits creative with up to 89% of a digital ad's in-market success, and the brief is where creative is decided. Once the brief has a message, the free hook generator writes the opening lines that carry it, and the AI ad generator for creative strategists is the continuous version of the same loop.

Five ways a brief fails, and the fix

Three messages instead of one
Fix: pick the one you would defend in a review and demote the rest to reasons to believe.
An audience described by demographics
Fix: describe what they believe, what they tried, and what they fear. "Women 25 to 45" tells a designer nothing they can act on.
An insight that is really a benefit
Fix: a benefit is what the product does. An insight is why this audience will believe it. If your insight would fit on the packaging, it is a benefit.
Proof nobody checked
Fix: every number, award and guarantee has to be traceable before the brief leaves your hands. A brief is where a fabricated statistic enters a campaign.
No success metric
Fix: name one primary measure and one guardrail. Without them the work gets judged on taste, which is the argument no creative process survives twice.

What this generator does and does not do

It works from what you type into it: one project, one audience, one goal, and whatever customer language you paste. That is enough to produce a brief worth editing, and it is deliberately the whole scope.

It does not read your ad account, your store or your review platform, so it cannot tell you which angle is already fatiguing or which claim your results have validated. It will not invent a price, a percentage, a date or an award: if a figure is not in what you typed, it does not appear in the brief. Selzee itself works from your live reviews, comments and campaign performance, which is the difference between a brief written once and a brief that refreshes as the feedback does.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a creative brief generator?

A creative brief generator is a tool that turns what you know about a product, its audience and its goal into the structured document the person doing the work reads. This one returns ten named sections: background, objective, audience, insight, single-minded message, reasons to believe, deliverables, tone of voice, mandatories, and how success is measured. It is free and runs without an account.

What should a creative brief include?

Background, one objective, the audience described by what they believe rather than by age, the insight that makes the message credible, one single-minded message, the reasons to believe it, deliverables with formats and quantities, tone of voice, the mandatories that cannot change, and one success metric with a guardrail next to it. The message and the insight are the two sections a weak brief is missing.

Is there a free creative brief template?

Yes, on this page. The plain-text template is the same ten sections the generator fills in, so you can copy it into Notion, Google Docs, Asana or a ticket and write the brief yourself. Use the template when you already know the answers, and the generator when you want a first draft to react to.

What is the difference between a creative brief and a content brief?

A creative brief decides what the work has to say and why a buyer will accept it. A content brief for a writer covers the reader, the promise and the proof for one piece. An SEO content brief is a third document again, built from keyword data and competing pages, and a search tool rather than this one is the right place to build it.

Does the generator invent statistics or customer quotes?

No, and it is enforced rather than left to the prompt. Prices, percentages, dates and years only appear if you typed them in, and a sample that carries a figure the input never mentioned fails the tool's own checks. Quoted customer language is copied word for word from what you paste, never synthesised.

Can I use it as a brand brief generator or a design brief generator?

Yes. Pick the type at the top and the ten sections stay the same while what they owe the reader changes. As a brand brief generator it covers positioning, tone and the rules everything downstream inherits. As a graphic design brief generator it asks for formats, dimensions and the mandatories a designer needs in writing.

Do I need an account?

No account, no email, no credit card. There is a cap on generations per page load so the tool stays free for everyone, and nothing you paste is saved to a Selzee account.
